Becoming an Optimal Blessing

Accepting God’s Gifts as For the Benefit of Others

By Paul and Evelyn Olivier

Preparing to retire in 2017, an opportunity presented itself for a mini-retreat: Sacred Fire – The Sessions of our Lives and the Stages of Discipleship conducted by Father Ron Rolheiser, OMI.  Set in three stages, the retreat was captivating, focusing on: The Struggle to Get our Lives Together; The Struggle to Give our Lives Away; and, Radical Discipleship – The Struggle to Give our Deaths Away.

It was this last stage that truly captured our attention and caused us to focus.  Father Rolheiser quotes Henri Nouwen here, At a certain point in our lives the question is no longer, “What can I still do that my life makes a contribution?” But: “How can I now live so my death will be an optimal blessing to my family, the Church, and the world?”

“How can I live so my death will be an optimal blessing…” encouraged us to think deeply about how we can be more helpful to others in the present and in the future; how can our passing from this life be a blessing to our family, church, and community?  This led us to conversations with our estate planning attorney, our financial planning advisor, our accountant and the Catholic Community Foundation. The Catholic Community Foundation (CCF) was a perfect partner for establishing the planned giving portion of our estate plan.  The process was easy and straightforward.  We established a Donor Advised Fund (DAF) with CCF.

Because a deposit to a DAF is a charitable gift we were able to take a charitable gift tax deduction on our income tax when we made our initial gift, even though we did not have all of the funds disbursed to specific organizations that year.  Gifts to other organizations from the DAF were made in subsequent years.

As the years go by, we are making additional deposits to our DAF and taking a charitable gift income tax deduction in the year of those deposits. And each year, we decide what organizations we will make gift recommendations out of the DAF while the funds in the DAF grow as these are invested.

CCF is a great place to have your DAF as all the funds held by CCF are invested according to the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops’ guidelines for socially responsible investing.  This helps assure investors that funds are being invested according to Catholic teaching.

As an example of how this can work, we recently had gifts made from our DAF to the following:

  • Archbishop’s Appeal
  • Catholic Charities
  • Our Lady of the Lake University
  • St. Peter Prince of the Apostles Catholic Church
  • Central Catholic High School
  • Project Quest
  • Catholic High School of Baton Rouge
  • LSU Foundation

We encourage you to consider a DAF as a giving arm for your charitable giving.

The Twin Missions of CCF

Since our inception in 2006, The Catholic Community Foundation of San Antonio has been an ardent champion of philanthropy within the Catholic community. We embrace a twofold mission:

Nurturing the Establishment of Permanent Funds:

At CCF, we walk alongside generous donors, empowering them to create enduring funds that stand as enduring testaments to their unwavering dedication to the causes close to their hearts. These funds are the bedrock of perpetual support, ensuring that the missions they support continue to thrive.

Facilitating Responsible Investment Stewardship:

CCF extends its committed hand to parishes, schools, and other Catholic organizations by providing them with efficient and morally sound investment management solutions. Our approach is rooted in Catholic Socially Responsible Investing, safeguarding the growth of endowment assets, and nurturing their capacity to serve our beloved Catholic community for generations to come.

5 Stages to Become a Donor With CCF

At the Catholic Community Foundation, embarking on the journey to become a compassionate benefactor is both straightforward and spiritually fulfilling. Here are five fundamental stages to become a cherished contributor and make a meaningful impact through our foundation:

Stage 1: Discern Your Catholic Calling

Stage 2: Select Your Philanthropic Approach

Stage 3: Connect with Our Catholic Community

Stage 4: Craft Your Catholic Giving Plan

Stage 5: Witness Your Catholic Impact

Catholic Education

Hope for the Future (Hope) provides tuition assistance for students in financially disadvantaged families, opening a gateway to an excellent academic and faith-based education at a Catholic school of their choice within the Archdiocese of San Antonio. Catholic education changes lives.
We offer tuition assistance to help make the educational and spiritual benefits of our schools a reality for these disadvantaged families.

Our funding comes from a variety of sources including nearly 20% from the Catholic Community Foundation which manages the Hope for the Future Catholic Schools Endowment Fund. This $10 million dollar Endowment provides nearly $500,000 in reliable support each year.  Since 2016, the Endowment has funded more than 3,500 tuition assistance awards totaling $2.9 million.

The Endowment is such a blessing because we know the funds will come in year after year, allowing us to assist the families who count on us to be there for them.

Catholic students from at-risk backgrounds are 42% more likely to graduate high school than their public-school peers. In fact, 98% of high school seniors who receive a Hope award graduate from high school and go on to college or military service. Catholic school graduates are change agents; they are more likely to vote, volunteer, give to a charity, and go to church than their
public-school peers.  Our Catholic Schools ignite a love of learning, inspire lives of faith, and compel young men and women to be the very best version of themselves, the person God created them
to be.

Endowments
